Ethiopia Has a Terrible Human Rights Record - Why Is the West Still Turning a Blind Eye?

Posted: 23/01/2014 11:55

Some disappeared; others were given lengthy prison sentences. One thing all thirty men arrested in 2012 in Ethiopia had in common was that they had criticised the state and the policies of the former Premier, Meles Zenawi.

PRESIDENT OF SOCEPP GETS DEATH THREATS

The president of SOCEPP, renowned poet and human rights advocate Ali Hussein, has received death threats from agents of the repressive regime in Addis Abeba. This is not the first time Ali Hussein has been harassed by the agents of the repressive regime but this latest death threat, received during the holiday season, is particular in that it clearly asserts that Ali and his family would be killed without doubt. Canadian police in Winnipeg are investigating the affair.

International Child adoptions becoming a new export industry and trade in Ethiopia.

By Meron Admasu/from Norway

The international Adoption law – is a type of adoption in which an individual or couple becomes the legal and permanent parent(s) of a child who is a national of a different country.

How adoption agencies work in Ethiopia

According to Ethiopian child adoption law – adoptive parents must submit post adoption reports at three months, six months, and one year. After the first year, the reports must be filed yearly until the child turns 18. This is a commitment that the adopting parents, home study agency, and adoption agency must sign when submitting documents for the adoption. Around 70 adoption agencies have set up business in Ethiopia and half of them are unregistered.

However the adoption process in Ethiopia is marred by criminal activity and corruption, in recent years.

I do not subscribe to the contentious view that there is no growth in Ethiopia. There was in fact growth under the Imperial regime and under the Dergue. The current ruling party tried to diminish the contributions of previous regimes solely for a political reason.

ESAT: A Dilemma of Independent Media in Free Society

By Ewnetu Sime |

I have been watching on 12/11/13 the brutal dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, who repressed Ethiopians for nearly two decades and became a symbol of notorious human rights abuse, making comments about Nelson Mandela's legacy on Ethiopia Satellite Television (ESAT). The SBS radio also conducted similar interview with Mengistu. As it is well known, under Mengistu's Red Terror killings campaign, disappearances and kilings, beatings, mutilations, drowning, electrocutions etc. were a daily horror. In short period, the death toll was estimated as high as 500, 000 people. It is the worst act of state-sponsored terrorism in history of Ethiopia.

Merchants of deception

By Gemencho

The May 2005 election was supposed to go according to the plan.  The TPLF would allow the election, as long as it controlled the entire electoral process. The loyal opposition would begrudgingly go along with that.  The people, whom the election was supposedly for , would remain on the sidelines as cheerleaders.  The donor countries would congratulate all three-  the TPLF, for allowing the election,  the loyal opposition for not setting unreasonable pre-conditions, such as demanding the election to be free and fair, and the people for accepting the outcome, whatever that be. The election day came.  The TPLF declared itself, the winner.  The loyal opposition cried foul, and appealed to the conscious of the donor countries to intervene on its behalf.

Perverted curiosity on the History of Ihapa

By Mesfin Mulugeta

“Better to die on one’s feet than to live on one’s knees” Dolres Ibarruri (aka La Pasionaria)

There is now a growing interest on the history of EPRP. The curiosity, however, is perverted. It is so because the attempt is not to recount its accomplishment, but the impoverishment of the Ihapa led generation. If a book specially defames the history of EPRP, then in no time people with a broad spectrum of political affinities, flock in to write reviews and critiques.

A Book Review on “Wore Negari”

By Haile Tolla:

I started reading Wore Negari: A Memoir of an Ethiopian Youth in the Turbulent 70s, by Mohamed Yimam, first copy right 2013, not only out of sheer intellectual curiosity, but also out of the years-old yearning for seeing the admirable history of my generation, of which I was a very small part, compiled carefully and objectively so that coming generations would learn valuable lessons both from our success and our failings.

Et tu, ESAT?

By Yilma Bekele

‘Et, tu Brute?’ is what the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was heard to have said when he saw his dear friend Marcus Brutus in league with his assassins. In English he was saying ‘you too, Brutus?’ It is said by historians that Caesar was fond of Brutus and treated him as he would a son. His betrayal must have been very painful.

SHAME ON YOU ISRAEL!

Right after the tragedy that befell Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia (150,000 deported, some killed, many tortured and all humiliated), it is now the turn of Israel to deport back hundreds of Ethiopians. The man considered a traitor and a criminal by many people in Ethiopia, that is to say Hilawe Yosef now purged and dumped in Israel to serve as ambassador, has, as expected, bent backwards, to assure all that the deportees will be given some money, free air ticket and medical service. He expects us to applaud the government of Israel.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MASSACRE IN GAMBELLA

On December 13, we observe the tenth anniversary of the massacre of Anuaks in Gambella by the forces of the repressive regime than headed by the late Meles Zenawi. The systematic rampage and murder of Anuaks was ordered by Meles himself with the agreement and prompting of Abaye Tsehaye (still a top official) and Dr. Barnabas. The on the place culprits had also been identified and several calls were made to bring all the culprits to justice.

Ethiopian officer recalls training Mandela

The observance of the World Human Rights Day every year on December serves the bitter purpose of recalling that Ethiopia’s human rights has worsened. The same is true this year.

No More Green Terror in Saudi Arabia!!

By Tedla Asfaw

Tuesday Dec. 10, 2013 winter has arrived early in New York City. Light snow has just stopped dropping around 2 pm. The candlelight vigil in front of Saudi Arabia Mission to United Nations for the third time in a month went without any problem thanks to the brave New Yorkers who came out no matter what  not deterred by cold weather.

More than 100,000 Ethiopians expelled from Saudi Arabia

The seven-month period for amnesty for undocumented workers in Saudi Arabia has since expired, sparking unrest between Ethiopians and Saudi police. Now, over 100,000 Ethiopians have been returned to their homeland. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom said last week that up to 50,000 more citizens were still expected to return.

GOODBYE NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA

The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) sends its condolences to the families of Nelson “Madiba” Mandela and the people of South Africa for the passing away the great leader.

For us, Nelson Mandela exemplified courage and perseverance, a humane and democratic vision, tenacity and pan Africanism, reconciliation and loyalty to his cause for which he had said from the start he was ready to die. Mandela passed 27 hard years in prison (18 of them in the notorious Robben’s Island) but never gave up his fight, he did not knuckle under apartheid regime despite all that cruel system tried to break his will and stain his soul.

DENOUNCE THE MURDER OF MOHAMED IBRAHIM IN ADDIS ABEBA

Mohamed Ibrahim, a devout Muslim and the father of seven children, was arrested in Addis Abeba by the security police 29 days ago and taken to the notorious Ma’ekelawi (central) prison. Once there he was accused of being a terrorist under the sweeping anti-terror law (already used to jail journalists), beaten brutally, tortured in the usual cruel way of the Addis Abeba regime.

AIDS AND THE HEALTH DISASTER IN ETHIOPIA

World Aids Day has been observed globally and a lookt at the situation in Ethiopia does not lend itself to any kind of optimism. Once again, the regime in place has hidden the real statistics and manipulated selected “experts” to make up beat statements about Aids infection being reduced. Actually, the reality is still bleak.
