Dr. Feleke Eshete
May 24, 2008

On May 8, 2008 the man who devoted his life to the service of his country as a soldier for the aggrieved and the downtrodden finally gave up his valiant battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a scrooge that kept him bedridden for a couple of years. Kedir Mohammed's death ended his unyielding pursuit and the selfless commitment that he made as freshman at Haile Sellassie I University in the early nineteen sixties.

OPEN LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN OF BRITAIN STOP GIVING AID TO THE REPRESSIVE REGIME IN ETHIOPIA

Prime Minister,

The EPRP and Ethiopians at large have been saddened by the declaration made by the British High Commissioner in Addis Ababa to the effect that Britain has decided to give a 2,5 billion Birr aid to the repressive regime of Meles Zenawi. This is not, of course, the first time that Britain give support to this condemned regime in Ethiopia but Ethiopians have not relented in their call to the British government to stop giving aid and support to a regime that massacres them and has stolen their freely expressed election vote of may 2005.

By Kidane Alemayehu  UN Expert (retired)

It is highly gratifying to note that the new Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, unlike his predecessors, including Mr. Kofi Anan, is showing a keen interest in African issues right at the outset of his tenure.

Laughing at Africa

 By Hama Tuma

Laughing at Africa has been a favorite pastime of many people in the West since time immemorial. The “dark continent” as some chose to call it was the target of derision by self declared experts who had little credentials other than their mountain high prejudice against black people. Aristotle defined wit as an educated insult but Africa often got coarse buffoonery, cruel, cutting, demeaning, exclusive and more than often racist.

Afar: The impact of local conflict on regional stability

Tadesse Berhe and Yonas Adaye

Violent conflict is more the norm than the exception in the Horn of Africa. Conflicts are waged at various levels: state, regional, and local. Conflict involves various actors: governments, nationalist groups, religious groups, and community or identity groups with significant backing from external forces. It is a common for conflicts in the sub-region to promptly acquire a sub-regional dimension, thus transcending national borders by attracting kinsmen from across the border.

Ethiopia severs ties with Qatar

(BBC NEWS)

Ethiopia's government has announced it is breaking off relations with Qatar.

The Foreign Ministry said it was because of "Qatar's attempts to destabilise the sub-region and its hostility towards Ethiopia itself".

Ethiopia is thought to be angry at recent coverage from Al-Jazeera, based in Doha, and financial support given to Eritrea, accused of backing rebels.

Although the two countries have diplomatic relations, neither has an embassy in the other's capital.
