By Obo Arada Shawl

April 23, 2010

Introduction

Using the Latin alphabet to write ADWA, adwa or AADWA appears to portray insignificant difference to the naked eye or rather to the majority of Ethiopian intellectuals aka M’huran.

Open Letter to the Honorable Lennart Kotsalainen:

I'm deeply concerned by what is happening to Mr. Araya Tesfamariam, an Ethiopian journalist

They have held town hall meetings in Seattle, San Jose, Las Vegas, Washington DC and Atlanta and are coming to Los Angles this coming weekend. The delegation consists of Ato Seye Abreha, Ato Gebru Asrat, Dr. Negasso Gidada and Ato (engineer) Gezachew Shiferaw. All four gentlemen were ex members of TPLF, OPDO or AEUP.

Criminals and Red Terror Perpetrators: Is There Any Guarantee They Will Not Do It Again?

By A/Prof G. Tadesse
I am writing this short note in a response to recent radio interview of Dr Hailu Araya in Voice of America Amharic Program.

Welcome Kifle Mulat? Are you alive? Were you in Asmara or in the Diaspora?

Getachew Reda
Please post this letter on your website until I come out with a commentary in Amharic (I am not currently on PC with Amharic font) regarding the Ethiopian Free Press Association lead by the Ato Kifle Mulat. Honestly speaking, I am angry, frustrated by the so many of the called Diaspora opposition media.

Terror against Citizens is a Crime at Any Rate

April 18, 2010 at 10:15 pm (Commenatry)

By Yelfiwos Wondaya

With all due respect, Dr. Hailu and nameless journalist, Reporter or what have you, every which way you spin it around, terrorism is terrorism. On the contrary, being selfless, generous, and brave in terms of fighting for the weak and vulnerable citizens, and being loyal to friends and causes, and taking a heroic measure as a result to reverse the terror acts unleashed against citizens in defense is moral and conscientious at any rate.

THE TIME OF THE BLOVIATORS or HOW TO SAY NOTHING IN FIVE HUNDRED WORDS

April 18, 2010 at 9:09 pm (Commenatry)

By Hama Tuma

I am sure not many of you know the word bloviator–I did not till someone told me to check it in Google. It means pompous, someone who puffs his chest and makes boastful declarations. The word defines many Ethiopian pseudo and self declared intellectuals of our time.

Was the Revolution tragic and brutal?

by Kassahun

Someone close to my taste said, “what is very tragic is to sleep through a Revolution”, doing a Rip Van Winkle on the momentous event shaking the given country. Let me state from the outset that I have not (yet) read the book by Maaza Mengiste (Beneath the Lion’s Gaze) and I do not know the person or the politics of the reviewer of her book, Ato Abebe Gelaw.

(JT) A top Egyptian newspaper "Almasry Alyoum" reported that Egypt considers ethnic division in Ethiopia important to securing its Nile River domination and the Egyptian government is also planning to use multi-million dollar investment projects in Ethiopia as economic leverage to stop future large-scale Ethiopian projects.

Amnesty International criticise government on torture

AADWA TWO: Call me by my name - A Short Commentary on the recent conferences held on the so-called Horn of Africa

Obo Arada Shawl - April 13, 2010

Why the Horn? The Horn looks like a peninsula and it juts into the Arabian Sea and it lies along the southern side of the Gulf of Aden. Physically it stretches to 2 million sq. km and demographically houses app one hundred million people.

According to the classification by the State Department of USA, the Horn of Africa comprises, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Djibouti and currently it includes Eritrea but not the Sudan.

THE USEFUL DELUSION OF BEING INDEPENDENT

Hama Tuma

Without going deep into the not so negligible difference between an illusion (more of a perceptual problem) and a delusion (concerning belief despite facts to the contrary) it is safe to state that most of Africa suffers from the delusion of being independent fifty years after some 18 African countries allegedly gained their “independence” from Colonialism which was a tricky monster if there ever was one.

What Does “People” means in definition? (Ethio-Eritrea Issue)

By Getachew Reda www.Ethiopiansemay.blogspot.comThis briefly written article is a reply to all concerned fellows who are critical to the Ethio-Eritrea People to People friendly conference carried here in San Jose. This response is not of the committee. This response is mine as a citizen and a media operator.

THE RETURN OF THE COUP

April 5, 2010 at 10:19 am (Commenatry)

Hama Tuma

Those who had been claiming that Africans enjoy sequels and the comfort of the misery they are used to have now been vindicated. The return of the coup d’etat highlights and confirms this for all to see. Expectedly, there would be those cynics who would ask “why not the coup?” indeed when civilian power holders are corrupt and their sanity really in question

ILLEGAL ACTION AGAINST OROMO DISSIDENTS

The regime of Meles Zenawi has for longt targeted militants of the Oromo ethnic group and undertaken repression in Oromo inhabited areas.

“Conference on the Horn of Africa ”

By Yelfiwos Wondaya

One wonders why some quarters continue to avoid the name that says Ethiopia . If the intention is to extract our patriotic memories we hold on firm for Ethiopia , the intention will not go any further than it already did. However, I leave that for the groups to elaborate on the notion of name changing trail and beyond, and yet as any loyal citizens, I remain firm in using my shield, a symbolic image that is associated with Ethiopians’ defense system against foreign aggression. Defending is what I know and defending is what I do to shield my identity.

Japan, please don't go grabbing Ethiopians' land

Reflections on feelings and farmland born of an exciting time spent serving Haile Selassie

On March 15 just gone, this newspaper carried an excellent but disturbing article by John Vidal, environment editor of the London-based Guardian newspaper. He wrote about food shortages and land-grabbing in Africa, and I was particularly troubled to read about deals going on to sell Ethiopian land to foreign investors. In the article, an Ethiopian government spokesperson was quoted as saying that "Ethiopia has 74 million hectares of fertile land, of which only 15 percent is currently in use — mainly by subsistence farmers . . . "

FREE BERTUKAN MIDIKSA!

AADWA, a political bridge for Ethiopia, I By Obo Arada Shawl

April 1, 2010

This is not about April the Fool. It is for real. Today, a certain Ghanaian provoked me that I am either from a small country known as Eritrea with no resources and or that of Ethiopia a country endowed with famine whose people are ignorant and miserable to say the least.

Beyond Doctrine: Explosive ‘stability’ is not sustainable

By Alem Mammo

Successive U.S. and western governments repeatedly have pronounced their intention to partner with states and support the advancement of democracy and freedom in the African continent. Surely, these well-intentioned commitments often generate a positive reaction from the civil society and pro-democracy groups in Africa and around the world.

"THE ETHIOPIAN RED TERROR TRIALS",

(Edited by Kjetil Tronvoll, Charles Schaefer & Girmachew Alemu Aneme), James Currey, UK, 2009, 158pp

I had intended to write an extensive review of this book, a collection of very informative and analytical articles by scholars who are either Ethiopian or foreigners like Tronvoll who are well informed on the reality in Ethiopia, but other engagements made this difficult.

BRITAIN SHOULD STOP SUPPORTING REPRESSIVE REGIME IN ETHIOPIA

MARCH 24/2010
POLITICAL PRISONER BIRTUKAN MIDIKSA,DENIED MEDICAL ATTENTION
The irresponsible statement by Meles Zenawi ("Birtukan Midiksa is fine but she may have gained weight due to lack of exercise" ) highlights the callousness of the person leading the repressive EPRDF regime that has illegally imprisoned former Judge Birtukan Midiksa. The fact is Birtukan Midiksa, who was in solitary confinement for long in the notorious Kaliti prison, needs urgent medical care.

Ethiopia's donors asked to condemn 'attack'

The Ethiopian government is waging "a co-ordinated and sustained attack" against its opponents ahead of May elections and countries like Canada that send aid to Ethiopia should condemn it, a new report says.

MELES ZENAWI: TRAMPLING ON INFORMATION RIGHTS

Human Rights Watch on Ethiopia

Ethiopia is on a deteriorating human rights trajectory as parliamentary elections approach in 2010. These will be the first national elections since 2005, when post-election protests resulted in the deaths of at least 200 protesters, many of them victims of excessive use of force by the police.

Billionaires and Mega-Corporations Behind Immense Land Grab in Africa
