Ethiopia 'ready for Eritrea war'

BBC NEWS

Ethiopia's prime minister says he is strengthening his army in preparation for an attack by long-time foe Eritrea.

"Our defence forces have the capacity to deter aggression and to repulse it if it occurred," Meles Zenawi told MPs.

An Eritrean minister said Mr Meles was "paranoid" and trying to divert attention from his domestic problems. He denied backing Ethiopian rebels

Justice is like fire; even if one covers it with a veil, it still burns

(Malagasy Proverb)

One of our strongest weapons is dialogue, sit down with a man, if you have prepared your case very well, that man, after he has sat down to talk to you, will never be the same again. It has been a very powerful weapon .

Introduction

All those who desire to see a democratic, free, stable, peaceful, secure and prosperous Ethiopia can only wish all the divisions, rifts, squabbles, mistrusts and hatred borne of the many real and imagined difficulties and history come to an end through a moratorium freely entered out of respect of the important historic moment that September 11, 2007 provides as Ethiopia’s 2000 year old 2nd Millennium!

Dr. Getachew Begashaw’s paper “Is it really Lessons learned and the Way Forward?”

LA UEDF Support Committee - June 23, 2007

Why are our lessons learned from the May 2005 elections and its aftermath so different from that of Dr. Getachew Begashaw’s as presented to the Canadian Peace-building Coordinating Committee in Toronto – entitled “Lessons from the May 2005 Ethiopian Elections: The Way Forward” . Before we address the topic, we would like to say this is written in the hope of starting a healthy and constructive dialogue from which we believe refined positions and clearer directions will ensue. We hope our modest contribution will foster a democratic culture that will contribute towards building a democratic system.  It is not meant to score points and engage in a “win/lose” discourse.

Ethiopian Prisoners Sign Paper in Bid for Release

Thursday, June 21, 2007; Page A16

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania -- Ethiopian opposition leaders jailed in a brutal crackdown following 2005 elections have signed a document accepting partial responsibility for the violence in exchange for their release, senior U.S. and Ethiopian officials said.

Only some of the 38 political detainees, whom Amnesty International has called prisoners of conscience, have agreed to sign the document. Others, including the senior opposition leaders, have refused, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are involved in the discussions.

Each one of you is needed in our war against terrorism being carried out against the people of Ethiopia by its own government!

UNITED NATIONS -- After years of conflict and a tense border dispute, Ethiopia has accepted a U.N. commission's ruling to turn over a disputed town to Eritrea.

"I believe it's good news ... that was one of the bottlenecks in the situation," U.N. associate spokesman Yves Sorokobi said Thursday. "If they do agree, it should move the process forward a bit more quickly."

Azanaw Demile, ak Tulu, was also forcefully deported from the Sudan and handed over to the Tigrean front that took power in May 1991. All were taken to Bahr Dar where they were imprisoned with other captives. From there, the traces of the above disappeared as the reports indicated that they were taken to Tigrai and sent to one of the secret prisons there. The regime denies ever holding them though some of its officials have said in private that "all were shot and killed".

Evaluating Three Decades of Ethiopian Resistance, its Challenges, Achievements and Failures: Perspectives for Political and Leadership Change

By Dr. Maru Gubena

Almost all relatively professional institutions or political organizations see an evaluation – or a brief presentation of policy-related activities or past experience – as a healthy and even vitally important part of both growth and development, whether this involves the general public or individuals who are involved and interested in the organization’s activities. Both large and medium-sized organizations see an evaluation or such a report as tools of understanding, cooperation, integrity, confidence building and a source of motivation for active members and financial contributors. More importantly, it is from an evaluation of outcomes and results, whether intended or unintended, that we draw lessons, learn, and correct or redirect policies and policy-related projects. In some extreme cases, however, and depending on the nature and size of the organization, an evaluation can stimulate or force a leader or leaders to revisit the original vision – the very foundation upon which the organization has been constructed – to s ee if it can be adjusted and whether the existence of the organization can be maintained.

Little Knowledge is dangerous (Anglican church)

Silence is golden (Coptic church)

Too much information is lethal (Vatican)

Wisdom is everything (EPRP collective leadership)

Balancing is an Ethiopian ACT

So far, the collective leadership and the Party of EPRP have survived many ups and downs. The AB (ANJA & b’TENA) story within EPRP is relegated to history. The concept of B’tena has been realized by almost everybody for its social and cultural havoc. ANJA belongs solely to the leadership style whereas B’TENA refers to the members or followers of the Party. Both leadership and follower ships should equally share accountability and responsibility Anja and Bitena respectively. However, before relegating them into archives, we need to put them in their proper perspectives.

But an opposition leader said it was "a very tragic day for the rule of law and for democracy in Ethiopia".

Surge in Adoptions Raises Concern in Ethiopia

Published: June 4, 2007 (New York Times)

ST. PAUL — Ethiopia was not on Mark and Vera Westrum-Ostrom’s list when they first visited Children’s Home Society & Family Services here to explore an international adoption.

Ukraine was first, because of their family heritage, until the couple discovered that the adoption system there was chaotic, with inaccurate information about orphans’ health and availability.

Vietnam was second, after they saw videos of well-run orphanages. But the wait would be at least a year and a half.

Then they learned about Ethiopia’s model centers for orphans, run by American agencies, with an efficient adoption system that made it possible for them to file paperwork on Labor Day and claim 2-year-old Tariku, a boy with almond eyes and a halo of ringlets, at Christmas

CALL ME BY MY NAME: A commentary

Wolde Tewolde alias Obo Arada Shawl

June 1, 2007

Politics: It is an open ended Relationship. We can build or we can destroy the bridge of Relationship. It is a matter of choice. I for one have chosen to build the bridge. Actually it was my profession to build a bridge. In the field of Ethiopian politics, the ELF, OLF, EPLF, TPLF, and the rest liberation fronts have chosen to destroy the bridge. I believe because their leaders were mainly men and men usually think in terms of space – a physical space while women conceptualize in terms of Time. The era of women has finally arrived in the Ethiopian societies. Hopefully the story of MAKON within EPRP will be a guiding light for all of us - men and women.

EPRP has never attempted to destroy a bridge. EPRP considered itself as a human bridge and I want to testify that it is not dead and cannot be dead provided people are open to understand its political history, its members, supporters and its leaders. I for one have made an effort to answer the following questions for my personal judgment. By the way, I am not an EPRP apologist. I am against sky-is-falling rhetoric.

Do we know the political history of EPRP?

Do we know its members?

Do we know its supporters?

Do we know its leaders?

Until we know or make an effort to answer these basic questions, I think we should withhold our judgments.

An unconfirmed number of people were also killed in an explosion in Degah Bur town, officials said.

Ethiopia denies eastern losses (BBC News)

The two main rebel groups in eastern Ethiopia say their forces have killed dozens of Ethiopian soldiers in joint operations in May in the Ogaden region.

But senior Ethiopian official Bereket Simon said their claims were untrue and just an attempt to get media attention.

A statement from the Oromo Liberation Front said several separate attacks had led to more than 150 soldiers killed.

The BBC's Amber Henshaw in Addis Ababa says there is high tension in the area since an attack on a Chinese oilfield.
