By Obo Arada Shawl - November 13, 2008

13 days ago an ordinary name Obama became not only an historical event but as well as a household word. It is the only name that ends with a vowel “A” in the American Presidential names. Arusi or Arsi, the smallest state of AEthiopia begins with the letter “A”. What’s is in a name? Call me by my name.

Lessons of the Obama Victory

Some Lessons from the Obama Victory (Hama Tuma)

I was wrong and as I said before this was one time I was happy to be proved wrong. I was one of those who said America would not elect a black man or a half black man to the White House. America has surprised me and many others by stretching its hands towards hope, daring to swim the current of prejudices and conservatism, looking foreword and defeating the apathy that was said to have gripped the young generation.

The passing away of Mengistu wasihun

It was with deep shock and grief that we received the news of the sudden and unexpected passing away of  Mengistu Wassihun

It seems that his sudden and unexpected death was caused by injuries he suffered in a traffic accident two months ago in Colorado denver.

He was a good person who had a vision for our country, a vision of a country where people can live in freedom and harmony without suppression, strife or conflict. His efforts to realize this vision in the form of activities aimed at consolidating our unity and serving our community, all in addition to the activities and obligations in his personal life.

He is survived by his beautiful wife and three wonderful children.

Whose nationalism?

By Gemencho

It is a distortion to place history outside of the ideological and material conditions that shape social relations, constraints and conflicts. To do so, is to overlook the dynamics and complexity of domination which includes but not limited to class, gender, race, ethnicity , religion and reduce it to one universal form or another.

Africa cheers Obama victory

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA Nov 05 2008 16:47
African leaders on Wednesday hailed the prospect of the first black United States president entering the White House, with Nelson Mandela saluting Barack Obama for living the dream of change.

SO WHAT IF OBAMA WINS?

SO WHAT IF OBAMA WINS?

Imamu Amiri Baraka called hope a delicate suffering while someone else called it tomorrow's veneer over today's disappointment. No question that Ethiopia's suffering millions need hope, but then the same Ethiopians say he who lives on hope dies with desire. Very realistic you would say but it won't be correct all the way. Ethiopians, or at least her so called intellectuals, are complicated.

PROFITING FROM ETHIOPIAN BLOOD THE DISASTROUS INVASION OF SOMALIA

October 29 2008

The ongoing hue and cry over a possible withdrawal of the invading troops of Meles Zenawi from Somalia is but a smokescreen for a greedy enterprise that has profited from the blood of ordinary Ethiopians. Meles Zenawi invaded Somalia for no strategic Ethiopian concern but he and his regime wanted to profit financially, politically and militarily from the undertaking. In the process, thousands of Somalis and Ethiopians have perished.

EPRP DENOUNCES NEW REPRESSIVE LAW TO BE PROCLAIMED BY THE REGIME

October 15 2008

It has been twice revised since May 2008 but it has become more repressive each time. It is before the rubber stamp parliament and it will for sure be adopted as the Meles Zenawi regime has ordered it should be. The Charities and Societies proclamation that will set up the all powerful and arbitrary Charities and Societies Agency is aimed at banning NGOs working on human rights issues in Ethiopia (women's, children's, disabled person's rights, etc...

No End in Sight in Somalia But the Future bears Little Hope

by Scott A Morgan

There are Indications that the US Military is not even sure about which part of its Command Structure will take the lead in Fighting the Piracy in Somalia. For the Time Being it will be CENTCOM (US Central Command) not AFRICOM that will be leading the effort. Currently Naval Elements from the Fifth Fleet are part of the International Armada that is attempting to eradicate Piracy at the South End of the Red Sea

“A Government In Exile”

By Yelfiwos Wondaya - October 14, 2008

Once again a fear of backdoor dealings dominating Ethiopian thinking both at home and abroad for sometime must come to a close now. Ethiopians are no longer interested in a group that carries out an indirect sort of dealings with anyone other than our own to settle our national affaires. To begin with, one would say without fear of contradiction that an initiative that comes from outside into a place where it does not belong is bound to fail. In all honesty, though coordinating the various aspects of our activities, organizing the potential candidates of our future

THE RAMPAGE OF THE MORAL BRIGADE OR MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

By Hama Tuma

The authorities in South Sudan have rounded up girls and women
wearing trousers in what they call a vigorous campaign to “preserve our culture”. What is the dress culture of Southern Sudanese? The “jellabiya” of the Arab North? The Dinka tribal wear if it at all exists?

Ethiopian need 'under-estimated'

Ethiopian boy Tareknge and his motherBy Martin Plaut
BBC Africa analyst

Aid agencies are warning that Ethiopian authorities are under-estimating the scale of the country's drought.

Official estimates of the number of people facing hunger and hardship stand at 4.6m but agencies warn the real figure could be more than 8m.

There is also confusion over the amount of money needed to meet the crisis, with the Oxfam agency estimating it at about $500m.

However, the United Nations reports that $772m has already been pledged.      Read More>>>
