US gives stark warning to Eritrea

By Elizabeth Blunt
BBC News, Addis Ababa

The US has issued Eritrea with its strongest warning yet over its alleged support for terrorism.

A senior US official said the presence of an exiled Somali Islamist leader in Asmara this week was further evidence Eritrea gave sanctuary to terrorists.

The gathering of further intelligence could lead to Eritrea being named as a state sponsor of terrorism - followed by sanctions, the official said.

The Eritrean government has accused the US of deliberate distortion.

The team is probing rights violations and humanitarian issues in the conflict between troops and the Ogaden National Liberation Front in the Somali region.

The ONLF has been fighting for independence for ethnic Somalis in the region for more than 20 years.

The conflict flared in April when the ONLF attacked a Chinese-run exploration team, killing 74 people.

Ethiopia 'blocking MSF in Ogaden'

By Martin Plaut
BBC Africa editor

International aid agency Medecins Sans Frontiers has accused Ethiopia of denying it access to the country's eastern Ogaden region.

The barren region has recently been the scene of a fierce conflict between government troops and rebel forces.

The exclusion follows an order to the Red Cross to stop operations in Ogaden.

The rebels accuse the government of imposing a blockade and creating what they described as a man-made famine. Ethiopia denies imposing no-go zones.

“As long as boundaries inherited... drawn arbitrarily with no heed to the ethnic, economic and social realities of Africa (continue), so long shall we be plagued by the political refugee problem… (Thus) the fault is in ours, not in our stars!”K. Nkrumah, October, 1965, Accra

Response to the recent statements of DLA Piper on HR2003 and political conditions in Ethiopia

Dear Mr. Klein:

I write this letter to challenge recent statements that you have personally made in a radio interview, and other statements made by your firm on behalf of your client the “Government of Ethiopia”. In these statements you and your firm make certain factual assertions about political conditions in Ethiopia, and inaccurately characterize the legislative intent of H.R. 2003 (“Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007”. I believe a number of statements that you and your firm have made concerning political conditions in Ethiopia and H.R. 2003 are grossly inaccurate; and other statements reflect a reckless disregard for the truth.1 I am a member of the Coalition for H.R. 2003, eponymously named after the bill.

In 1986, a group of Ethiopian graduate students were enrolled at the University of Virginia Tech. On the first week of college day, we attended a conference on “Futuristic” seminars. The futurists explained at length on countries that would progress and regress. In the end they enumerated those countries without future. Ethiopia was listed as a futureless country. At that moment all my Ethiopian colleagues left the conference, as they were upset. I stayed not only until the question and answer session but also even after the conference has formally closed. I had to get a real explanation for their prediction. Having talked to some of them, I found out it was based on shallow reasoning and scientifically or statistically untenable.

Of Lies, Promised Joy, “Shimagles”, Pardons and Bananas

Alemayehu G. Mariam

8/6/2007

“If they will stop telling lies about us, I will stop telling the truth about them.”

Note to the reader: The following analysis may appear be a bit long for the casual reader of internet literature. I am told that “people do not read long political analysis” (and perhaps even short ones as Prof. Ephraim Isaac has proven to us). But I have been overwhelmed, as many have been, by a systematic and clever disinformation campaign calculated to mislead and deceive us about recent events in Ethiopia. We must fight back lies with Truth, and I hope the reader will take the time to read and consider my defense of the Truth against an avalanche of lies and deception that have been unleashed against us recently.

Fall from Grace: From New Breed of African Leader to “Vicious Dictator”

Zenawi was once the darling of Tony Bliar and Bill Clinton. He was lionized as one of the “new breed of African leaders”. There was boundless hope that Zenawi and a menagerie of other anointed African “new breeders” would lead the continent out of the darkness of authoritarian rule into the sunshine of freedom, democracy and human rights.

I dedicate this piece to the Kality prisoners of conscience, and all political prisoners in Ethiopia; and above all, to Truth, which has set some of them free, and no doubt, will set all political prisoners free in Ethiopia.

We are all the Losers: Looking at the Effects of the Ethiopia–Eritrea Border Dispute

By Maru Gubena
( This paper was written in early 2000, and was published …)

It is difficult if not impossible for most of us to assess the effects, including the loss of human lives, the displacement of a large number of people, and the impact on economies, of the still unsettled Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict – a most unfortunate war that is said to be a result of border dispute. To make such an assessment and be able to present relatively balanced figures on the repercussions of the war, one would certainly require a proper and probably lengthy study, including access to government documents in both countries and the cooperation of officials. In general terms, however, it is clear (as many observers have indicated) that if it is allowed to continue the war will have a devastating effect on the people of the two countries.

Ethiopian Socio-Cultural Rules Require Fundamental Change:  A Case from my Bag of Childhood Memories

It is in fact not difficult to provide multiple examples of Ethiopian socio-cultural rules that contain negative connotations, and which have been partly or fully responsible for molding the unaccommodating and unproductive attitudes of the members of Ethiopian society. WHY DIE?

I met a grim skeleton
freshly dug out of the grave
by armed young men chasing
their own agenda.
He was cursing and wailing
at everyone he met
this grim skeleton
just dug out from the grave.
I asked him why
he raved and cursed
He cursed me some
and then explained.
They dig us out
to kill us again, he said.
I've walked around
and I see everyone is dead,
the skeleton complained.

Why did we die in the first place,
go to the grave,
if those alive, for whom we died
are actually dead
and the killers dig us out
to deny us rest?
I had no easy answer
and the skeleton wept.
